EAL

Department Aims

  • To assess the existing level of English when foreign students arrive. We do this by using the Oxford Online Placement Test. This assessment informs students, parents and teachers of their position within the Common European Framework (CEFR).

  • Based on this initial assessment, students' interdisciplinary needs (listening, speaking, reading and writing) are then addressed and students are able to access a very successful way of achieving their targets.

  • The department provides a bespoke, tutoring service (Curriculum Enrichment), focusing on any gaps students may have in their learning, so that they can compete healthily with their peers and are fully prepared on their road towards Common Entrance.

  • All students are allocated an appropriate number of EAL and Curriculum Enrichment lessons, which may increase or decrease subject to regular reviews. (please see 'Timetables').

  • Our department works closely with the boarding team and all staff to ensure students' successful integration and happiness throughout their journey at Walhampton School and beyond.

Lesson structure (EAL)

  • We aim to teach our EAL students in groups that suit their abilities. These classes challenge our students in a learner-friendly environment. Alongside an amazing 24 hour exposure to English, both in their regular classes and in boarding, our EAL students can really enforce their grammatical understanding in EAL. With complete immersion, our overseas students can reach their full potential.

  • During EAL lessons, We use a varied programme, combining various media, visual aids and games to inspire learners, such as an integral learning tool, named the 'grammar gauntlet'. They compete as national teams! Follow this link to see a team in action.

Curriculum Enrichment

All students, hoping to progress in the UK education system have access to the curriculum even if they join the school as late as year seven. We have therefore developed a rigorous Common Entrance Curriculum Enrichment process, in addition to their regular EAL lessons, under the leadership of Lesley Ann Pidsley.
